Varietal Red Wine Barrels and Spirit Thief single malt whisky
When three thieves from Tasmania’s whisky industry chose to explore the marriage between spirit and heavily-charred ex-red wine casks in 2015, the outcome was uncertain. What they discovered years later, was that the red wine barrels recoopered into maturation casks provide a complex arrangement between oak, spirit, char, and tannin. As a result, the flavour profile of the whisky is bold, elegant and unique.
In general, the objective of wine-cask maturing is to add subtle layers of flavour not ordinarily present in traditional whiskies. Whether they’re matured in refill oak casks, ex-bourbon or even ex-sherry barrels, the delicate characteristics of a red wine matured whisky showcases different flavour profiles for finish and complexity. Experiments with non-fortified wines are a more recent development, the fruit from the wine supplements the taste of the underlying whisky, not supplanting it.
